Federation Quiz

Staffs WIs Celebrate Water at Annual Quiz

On a hot evening last week, 200 members of Staffordshire Federation of Women’s Institutes took part in the Federation’s Annual Quiz.

This year the theme was The Importance of Water but not all questions reflected the theme – there was something for everyone.

Severn Trent Water kindly supported the event, donating two water butts as raffle prizes and water saving devices for everyone.

The Ingestre Suite at The County Showground was a sea of blue and white with tables decorated with interpretations of how and why water is important. The Best Dressed Table trophy was awarded to Stowe-by-Chartley (B) WI.

The overall winners of the Quiz were Canwell (A) WI with a score of 93 out of 100. They will hold the Knighton Challenge Trophy for 12 months.

In second place, holding the Val Smith Memorial Trophy for the next year was Rolleston-on-Dove (A) WI with 90 points.

The event was organised by the Federation’s Education & Public Affairs Team. Their Chair, Karen Sulway, said, ‘I have been writing the Quiz questions now for over 10 years and the breadth of knowledge displayed by members always impresses. Every year the theme provides teams with the opportunity to research a subject and plan their table decorations. It is always a well anticipated event in our calendar and regardless of whether teams are competitive, everyone has a fun evening. I would like to thank everyone for making the event a success and the 20 strong team of volunteers for ensuring that the evening ran smoothly’.

The Quiz is held in the main Ingestre Suite at the Staffordshire Showground with ample free parking.

Doors open at 6.30pm and the Quiz starts promptly at 7.15pm with an intended finish of 9.30pm.

Quiz Questions are set by Karen Sulway, Chairman of Education & Public Affairs and volunteers collect the answer sheets in after every round to be marked by an experienced Team of Markers.

The questions are on a wide range of subjects.

There are 8 rounds with a maximum score of 100.

Provisional results are announced at the end of the Quiz and the full results are posted on SFWI Facebook and webpage the next day, after moderating.

Every year a theme is set, usually around one of NFWI’s resolutions and this year the theme is Keep Britain Green to acknowledge that this is the 70th anniversary of the NFWI Resolution that resulted in the formation of Keep Britain Tidy.

Ladies are asked to interpret that theme by dressing themselves and their tables appropriately and there will be a Certificate for the winning table. However, this is optional.
